Wood Stove Clearances

Proper wood stove clearances is essential for the safety and operation of your heater. This is one of the first considerations when doing an installation.

Clearances are the distances measured from the stove to the nearest combustible surface. This includes wood, panelling, cloth, etc... The way of measuring can vary from brand to brand. Some measure from the top plate, others from various points on the unit. This is why its definitely important to consult the owner's manual.

In addition to the requirements listed in your owner's manual, you also need to consider the regulations for the home inspector, and for insurance reasons. As part of the permit procedure, there will be specific guidelines that need to be met in order to make sure the city or zoning board approves, which may or may not differ from the manufacturer.

Insurance concerns should also be noted. While your stove might meet manufacturer and zoning requirements, ultimately the insurer will need to give the go ahead for any underwriting.

Unfortuneatly, you may be installing in a place that will be tight for a fit. You should definitely look into heat shields as a way to increase the space. By blocking or covering the combustible areas, you can effectively increase the safety buffer without costly renovating.

The National Fire Protection Association is a great organization for fire safety requirements.
