Wood Stove ToolsWood stove tools are important pieces for working with your fire and equipment. A typical question for us is: can't I just use the gear that came with my fireplace? You can, but understand that they are designed differently. A wood stove has a confined space and it can be very tough to maneuver a full-sized poker, for example in a tight firebox. You'll find that they usually include tongs, poker, brush and a shovel in a kit. I would look for a set that has an ash rake as well. Those are ideal for spreading the coals and clearing space for new logs. Look for one right-sized for your stove, usually about eighteen inches in length. Make sure they are well-made. Some fireplace models are really more decorative and will not last with repeated usage. The standard poker design also isn't always ideal either. The end spike can be hard to work with, especially in the corners. Find a design with a hook end but no pointer if you can. While you can buy them separately, they usually come in a set. Prices can definitely vary but they usually start around $75 f but they can easily get up to $300. There's no good reason to spend that much, which is nearly the price of a new heater. But definitely budget in some money for this along with your intial heater purchase. Pilgrim makes a solid toolset made just for wood stoves. Its right sized and sturdy. The Model 18000 is highly recommended.
