Wood Gas StoveThe wood gas stove is an interesting item. Its not really in production as much for home heating, but it is gaining in popularity with some of the camping and outdoor stove crowd. Basically, these heaters work by using wood gasification techniques. Gasification is basically where the wood is heated with a low oxygen supply, in an airtight container. The wood doesn’t burn in the normal sense but gasifies into a combination of usually carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which moves into a combustion area. This gas is what is burned to produce the heat. These stoves are nice because they tend to be very efficient. Just a handful of twigs can produce enough to easily heat water. You’ll get a good amount of heat. They also tend be nearly smokeless, if they are burned at the right temperature to heat off the gas. Because of the heat, semi-open flame, and the carbon monoxide, these heaters should ONLY be used outside. In that regard, they are ideal for camping, hiking, and backpacking stoves. Wood gas stoves are getting more popular as a result of the search for alternative fuel sources to oil and normal gas.
